The new Netflix series will show Hilary Swank playing an astronaut who must leave her loved ones on Earth for a mission to Mars. A job that falls in the middle of a tragedy for her husband. The creator of Away revealed that he was inspired by his own life and the true story of two American astronaut brothers for this show.

Away’s story was inspired by real astronauts.

As NASA discovered another planet the size of Earth in January 2020, it was another true story of a NASA astronaut that inspired Away. In the new Netflix series, Hilary Swank portrays Emma Green, an astronaut who is going away from her family on a mission to Mars. Except that just before she leaves for the Red Planet, her husband Matt Logan (played by Josh Charles) has serious health problems. Andrew Hinderaker, the creator of the show, told CBR that he was inspired by the true story of Gabby Giffords, Mark Kelly and Scott Kelly for the synopsis.

As a reminder, in 2011, American politician Gaby Giffords was seriously injured in a shooting in Tucson. A bullet passed through the head of the Democratic Congresswoman, who was put into a coma and operated. Since this attack, the woman who was in the U.S. House of Representatives has been disabled, paralyzed in the right arm, with a very limited visual field. Her husband Mark Kelly, a NASA astronaut, had to go into space a few months after this tragedy. And her brother-in-law Scott Kelly (also a NASA astronaut like his twin brother) was already on a mission, away from his loved ones in the middle of this difficult time.

The project (the Away series that will be available on Netflix, editor’s note) started when Matt Reeves and Jason Katims brought me this beautiful Esquire article written by Chris Jones called Away about Scott Kelly’s 6-month mission on the International Space Station. During that time, he was aboard the Station when his sister-in-law Gabby Giffords was shot,” said Andrew Hinderaker, “The article really talks about how it felt to be away from his family when they needed him the most. For me, it was incredibly poignant.”

That’s what I wanted to write about.

So the creator of this new Netflix series wanted to show how difficult it is to leave your loved ones who are going through a terrible ordeal. “As I told Matt and Jason, along with my partner Eileen, we’ve been together for 15 years and she’s living with a progressive and rather terrible disease, which was diagnosed while I was out of town for the premiere of a play in Chicago,” he said, “So the feeling of what was described in this article, of what Scott felt at one point is that you are doing exactly what you are supposed to do, and then this news comes along where the life of someone you love has been turned upside down and your life is turned upside down, and all you want to do is be home“.

That’s what the trailer of Away shows, with Hilary Swank, helpless and having to do her job and leave Earth, her daughter and her husband as he goes through a complicated time. “So that’s what I wanted to write about because Eileen’s diagnosis was only made a few months before Jason and Matt brought the article to me. It’s something I wanted to explore and I felt like I had the opportunity to write about Eileen in many ways,” he added, “It was really the foundation of the series, and of course, the event that happens in our very first episode when Hilary Swank is preparing to leave for Mars and there is a medical crisis affecting her husband and disrupting the lives of her family and daughter.
